Pocket Review (2026): The Read-It-Later App After Shutdown

Mozilla closed Pocket on July 8, 2025. We audited its record, its pricing and what reviewers actually wrote, then checked what a Pocket reader should use now.

Summary

This pocket review audits Mozilla's read-it-later app after its July 8, 2025 shutdown. We score its record at 6.0 out of 10: 17 million users, a $44.99 Premium plan, G2 at 4.5/5 but Trustpilot at 1.7/5 because other companies share the name. You cannot sign up or export any more, since export closed on November 12, 2025, so we price the replacements for readers who used Pocket's Listen player.

6 /10

Pocket was the read-it-later app that taught a generation to save now and read later, and Mozilla closed it on July 8, 2025. This pocket review scores its record, not a purchase: 17 million users by 2015, a $44.99 Premium plan, and G2 at 4.5/5. You cannot sign up, install or export today, so the real question is what to use instead.

  • A built-in Listen player turned the saved queue into audio on mobile
  • Closed since July 8, 2025: no sign-ups since May 22, 2025, apps delisted, servers off
  • Export closed on November 12, 2025 and all user data went into permanent deletion
  • Public ratings are polluted by other companies named Pocket, so no star score can be trusted at face value

We did not use Pocket for 30 days, because nobody can. Mozilla removed it from the app stores on May 22, 2025, shut it down on July 8, 2025, and closed the export window on November 12, 2025. So this is an audit, not a diary. Between October 12 and October 17, 2026, we read Mozilla's blog post and support page, loaded getpocket.com live, opened the Wayback Machine capture of the Premium page from April 16, 2025, and counted the reviews on G2, Trustpilot and Product Hunt ourselves. For the Listen player we have no first-hand audio test, so we describe it from reviewers and from Pocket's own pages and score it lower for that uncertainty. Reddit is read from search excerpts only, without counts, because the site blocks our crawler. Every figure below carries its source and date.

Who this Pocket review is for

YES if you...

  • You saved articles in Pocket for years and want to know what you lost and what replaces it
  • You used the Listen headset icon on walks and commutes and need the closest audio replacement
  • You are writing about read-it-later tools and need dated, sourced numbers on the shutdown

NO if you...

  • You want a tool to sign up for this week, since Pocket accepts no new accounts and no new saves
  • You still hope to recover an old library, because Mozilla queued all data for deletion on November 12, 2025
  • You came for the Pocket AI voice recorder, which is a different company at heypocket.com

ROI breakdown: At $44.99 a year, Pocket Premium cost about 25% less than the monthly plan and roughly 62% less than Readwise Reader at $119.88 a year. The cheapest listening-capable replacements we priced start near $60 a year.

Hidden costs & gotchas
  • The permanent library never protected users from a shutdown, since the library lived on Mozilla's servers
  • Annual subscribers needed Mozilla's automatic prorated refund on July 8, 2025 to recover the unused months
  • The free tier shipped with recommendations you could not fully switch off, a complaint on G2

Pros and cons, on the record

Pros

  • Saving took one tap everywhere The browser extension and the phone share sheet were the loop reviewers praised most on Product Hunt and G2.
  • Premium was cheap for what it stored $44.99 a year bought a permanent library, suggested tags and full-text search, about $3.75 a month.
  • Mozilla refunded annual subscribers Annual plans were refunded pro rata and automatically on July 8, 2025.

Cons

  • No path to recover data after November 12, 2025 Mozilla disabled export and queued all user data for deletion that day. A library you did not export is gone.
  • Listening stayed a basic mobile player Reviewers describe a headset-icon Listen feature on mobile, and the shutdown left listeners comparing paid replacements.
  • Integrations lagged the rest of the category G2 reviewers flagged missing Notion links, no summaries and a Readwise gap at the time they wrote.
  • A closed product still draws wrong reviews Trustpilot and G2 mix in other companies named Pocket, so the headline stars mislead anyone who stops at the badge.
Verdict

Final verdict

6 /10

Pocket earned its reputation. It started as Read It Later in August 2007, reached 17 million users and 1 billion saves, and sold Premium at $44.99 a year, a price few replacements match. We score that record at 6.0 out of 10 and cap it hard on longevity, because the one thing a read-it-later app owes you is staying alive. Mozilla shut it on July 8, 2025 and deleted what you had not exported on November 12, 2025. If you are searching this pocket review to decide whether to adopt Pocket, the answer is that you cannot. If you are searching because you lost a library, you can still choose a replacement that lets you leave with your data. Recommended for: former Pocket users picking a successor, and anyone studying how a Mozilla product ends. Not recommended for: anyone expecting to install, sign up or recover data today.

Common questions

Is Pocket still available in 2026?
No. Mozilla removed the apps from the stores on May 22, 2025, shut Pocket down on July 8, 2025, and closed the export window on November 12, 2025. The website now shows a shutdown notice.
Can I still export my Pocket saves?
No. Mozilla's support page says export was disabled on November 12, 2025 and all user data was queued for permanent deletion. The window had run 174 days from the May 22 announcement. A file you saved before then can still be imported elsewhere.
Why did Mozilla shut down Pocket?
Mozilla said the way people save and consume content has changed, and it wanted to focus on Firefox features such as Tab Groups and improved bookmarks. It acquired Pocket on February 27, 2017.
What did Pocket Premium cost?
The archived page of April 16, 2025 lists $44.99 a year or $4.99 a month, with a permanent library, suggested tags, full-text search and unlimited highlights. Mozilla refunded annual subscribers automatically on July 8, 2025.
Is the Pocket AI voice recorder the same as Pocket?
No. Pocket at getpocket.com was Mozilla's read-it-later app. The Pocket AI recorder sold at heypocket.com is another company, and its complaints show up on the Trustpilot page for getpocket.com.
What is the best Pocket replacement for listening?
If you used the Listen icon, Matter is the closest loop on iPhone at about $60 a year direct. Instapaper at $59.99 a year works across Android and Kindle. Readwise Reader at $119.88 a year suits people who highlight.
Does Pocket Casts have anything to do with Pocket?
No. Pocket Casts is a podcast app by a different company. The two share a name and nothing else.
